Scott Brown Win 980Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (May 24, 2014) – Scott Brown became the fifth different winner in as many IMCA Modified features atop the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval this season by earning a hard-fought victory in Saturday night’s 20-lap main event.

While Brown fought off several stiff challenges along the way, Jeff Kaup added his second IMCA Sport Modified feature win of the year, Angel Munoz scored his first IMCA Stock Car victory, Sonny O’Hair took Thunder Car honors for the first time of the year and Jarett Lunow rolled on to his fourth consecutive Hornet triumph.

While Brown led all the way in the Modified main event from his pole starting position, he had his hands full much of the way and survived a pair of late cautions to post the triumph by a narrow margin ahead of Tracy Link and Austin Allen.

“The cautions didn’t worry me much,” the Garden City, KS, driver commented.  “My car goes good on a tacky track like this so I knew we were okay.”

Front row outside starter Tracy Link actually jumped into the lead on the initial start only to have it negated for a turn four incident.  Brown took advantage by racing into the lead on the restart and paced the field with intense battles for position through the pack in his wake.

Brown held the point ahead of Link, Van Gemmill and Nick Link when the race’s first caution flew after five laps for Ryan Heger, who entered the night atop the point charts.

By the time the next caution flew after 13 laps for a turn two tangle involving the husband-wife duo of Brendon and Casey Jo Gemmill along with William Nusser, Brown led father-and-son Link duo of Tracy and Nick with Cole Traugott up to fourth ahead of Mike Lunow.

Lunow dashed by Traugott on the restart with the lead battle becoming a four-way affair as Brown slid high exiting turn four on the 17th lap.  Tracy Link made contact with Brown in turns one and two, with Nick Link checking up only to spin after contact from Lunow.

Up to third behind Brown and Tracy Link on the restart with three laps to go, third-runner Traugott rolled to a stop in turn four to precipitate the final caution, setting up a two-lap dash to the stripe.

Up to third in the late stages, defending track champion Austin Allen raced past T. Link for second on the white-flag lap and moved in to challenge Brown for the lead entering turn one in the final corner.

Brown fought off the challenge and then held off T. Link and Allen as the trio raced under the checkered flag under a blanket.  Kale Beavers crossed the stripe fourth with Ven Gemmill rounding out the top five.

Jeff Kaup Win Sport Mods DCRP 052414In the IMCA Sport Modified ranks, defending track champion Jeff Kaup chased down early leader Brian May by the midway point and led the rest of the way in the 20-lap feature event to post his second win of the year and extend his points lead.

While Kaup worked forward from the tenth starting position, pole starter May paced the early rounds after a brief battle with fellow front row starter Jordan Meyer for the point.

Woodward, Oklahoma’s Kaup was up to fourth by the fourth lap before disposing of Josh Appel for third on the sixth round and then Tristen Barton for second on the eighth circuit.

Kaup wasted little time reeling in May and racing into the lead for keeps on the ninth round.  Kaup checked out only to have his advantage erased by the race’s only action after 15 laps for an incident between Bart Baker and Jimmy Jenkins.

Kaup slipped away again on the restart with Barton racing into second for keeps on the 17th round.  Appel filled out the podium in third with May and Austin Walker rounding out the top five.

Angel Munoz Stock Cars DCRP 052414In the IMCA Stock Car ranks, Lamar, Colorado’s Angel Munoz emerged from a race-long three-car battle for the lead that also included Brandon Fisher and Dusty Witthuhn to take his first DCRP win of the season, putting a halt to Perry Misner’s three-race win streak in the process.

With Fisher and Witthuhn on the front row and Munoz outside row two, the race turned into a three-way battle for the point almost from the outset of the 20-lapper.

Fisher and Witthuhn battled side-by-side much of the way before Witthuhn got loose exiting turn four.  While Witthuhn gathered it back in and rejoined the lead battle after the race’s final caution with three laps to go, Munoz pounced on second and then battled Fisher for the lead on the 17th round.

Munoz raced on to the stripe ahead of Fisher and Witthuhn with Josh Crombie and Misner rounding out the top five.

Sonny O’Hair took full advantage of the pole starting position in the Thunder Car feature by leading all 15 lap for his first triumph of the year.

Despite one caution midway through the race, O’Hair went unchallenged as he raced to the stripe ahead of Dan Rogers, who raced from eighth to second in the initial handful of laps.  Edwin Elliott raced from 14th to third with Tobby Schield and Will Bauer rounding out the current top five.

Jarett Lunow Win Hornets 052414Jarett Lunow continued his stranglehold on Hornet action on the inner asphalt oval, racing past Marci O’Hair on the second lap and leading the rest of the way in the 12-lapper for his fourth win in as many tries this year.

Racing action resumes at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday night, May 24, with a full card of championship action including IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Thunder Cars and Hornets.
