Bart Boyd Memorial June 26

The Nesquick Non-Winged Sprint Cars will be featured at the Bart Boyd Memorial Race.
Bart Boyd was more than a race fan, this guy was plumb ate up with Sprint Cars and the competition factor. He worked hard and always was fascinated by motors and machinery. Heck he even bought his wife a new combine for her birthday!
Last year we lost old Bart to a heart attack. It was something he knew that was going to take him at anytime cause he had been struggling with heart problems for quite a while. But racing was his passion and if he was not racing he was talking about it. He was on the phone with sprint car racer Jon Johnson when he died.
This Saturday night June 26th we honor Bart with a memorial race. Sprint Cars of course will have the top billing of all the other classes of cars. Bart’s friends, family, and other competitors will be here and they we know all have a “Bart story.” He would call me or come by track office and would say “There is no controversy going on your forum, we need to fire some up to make this more exciting.” Then he would post something and just laugh when I would call him and say where in the heck did you get that? On the other end of the phone he would be laughing and cutting up – it was all a game to him and he was loving life the whole way.
Funny guy, a great friend, a loving father, and one heck of a sprint car owner and fan. We miss yah Bart.

Nesquick Non Winged Warriors

After two years of listening to the sprint car fans and watching the local 305 guys struggle with motor costs it was time to try something different. Call it “old school” or whatever but non-winged sprint car racing is a lot more exciting for the race fans. The cars slide around, pass each other, and without that wing they are not glued down to the track in a follow the leader parade.
We had our first race on Friday night of the World of Outlaws and it was a great show. Even with a handfull of cars there was action everywhere. This was with a few drivers that just started racing and had never made a lap without a wing. They did good, kept from crashing, and was racey! Kris Moore said, “That is the most fun I have ever had drivng a race car!”
Saturday rained out and then we went to Sunday it was the same story – some spinouts and some near misses but no one got tore up. We sure could not say that with the Outlaws that day.
We got together with Nesquick and came up with some help to start this class. It pays $500 to win and every car will make at least $150 bucks.
Last year the late Bart Boyd and I was talking about how this motor deal was getting out of control with costs. Ole Bart was a smart guy – he could build a motor to run with the best of them and he was a pretty good chassis man. He and I talked about this non-winged deal then and now it is a reality.
The Nesquick Non-Winged Warriors are here with a race schedule and a season points championship and drivers making remarks that was “the most fun” – and isn’t that the reason why we are all here?
Watching the drivers work the wheel back and forth and all that action is sure to make anyone a sprint car fan.
A full set of rules are coming and maybe even a few races at some other tracks.

Saldana back to his winning ways!
June 13, 2010 by Ed Beckley

Joey Saldana won an old fashioned shootout on Sunday afternoon at Dodge City Raceway Park in the rain delayed finale of the Boot Hill Showdown over Jason Meyers, recovering from an early race penalty for having too many men on the track under a red flag and then trading the lead with Meyers three times to score his fifth victory of the season and the fifth of his career at Dodge City. Saldana also extended his lead in the World of Outlaws championship standings as he chases his first title.
Saldana used a strong double file restart on the high side of the track following a lap-22 caution to lead the field into turn one. He withstood one final caution with two laps to go, choosing the high side on the final restart of the night to charge to a quick lead over Meyers.
“It was a great effort,” said Saldana. “Luckily we came away with a win because Jason Meyers had a great car and we raced pretty hard for that. The track just suits sprint cars. I love it. Nobody wants to run the top and it blows me away. The top is just so fast here and I enjoy racing here. It’s not too big and it’s not too small. It suits the World of Outlaws perfect and I look forward to coming here every year.”
Saldana led on the initial start of the main event, though the red flag flew before that lap was in the books, leading to a complete restart. Meyers led on second start of the 30-lapper, after Saldana was moved back a row for the penalty under the opening lap red flag. The native of Clovis, California, who is a former winner at Dodge City Raceway Park, led a total of 19 laps en route to a runner-up finish.
“I knew what I needed to do and made the wrong choice,” said Meyers. “It’s an embarrassment to give that one away on the restart there and I gave Joey (Saldana) the race back. It was a real big mistake, but there’s nothing we can do about it, but learn from it now and move on and learn from it.”
Saldana took the lead for the first time on the 10th lap on the bottom of turns three and four. Meyers moved back in front following a strong lap-12 restart as he used a textbook slide job in turns one and two. Saldana took the lead for the final time on the 22nd lap.
Lucas Wolfe scored a third-place finish as he continues to close in on his first career World of Outlaws win. The 2008 Rookie of the Year lined up 10th in the dash and charged all the way to fourth to earn a second row starting spot in the main event. He had a spirited battled with 20-time series champion Steve Kinser for the final podium position late in the going on a couple of double file restarts.
“It was another good run for us,” noted Wolfe. “We’re continuing to run consistent which is very important. I think we were as good as they were in open track, but never quite got in position. We got a good restart a couple of times and they didn’t go through, but that’s just tough racing.”
Kinser wound up fourth to earn his series leading 23rd Top-10 finish of the season. The Hall of Famer remains third in points as he chases his record 21st title.
Paul McMahan finished fifth, with Jason Sides in sixth and Kraig Kinser seventh. Brian Ellenberger, the reigning series Rookie of the Year came home a season-best eighth. Ben Gregg scored the best finish of his World of Outlaws career coming home ninth, with three-time series champion Sammy Swindell, who won the opener at Dodge City on Friday night coming home in 10th.
