Matt Brack Wins BST/ IMCA Crown
September 13, 2009 by Ed Beckley
The BST East and West Tours started in the spring and ran through the summer giving Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas some of the Best Modified Shows of the year. Producing two Champions along the way, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, CO winning the BST East Title and Matt Brack of Mead, CO winning the BST West Title. As the West and the East title holders, both went into the “Quest for the Crown” with a 20 point advantage. 3 nights of this Series was held during the 5 State Fair in Liberal, Kansas on their newly rebuilt 3/8 mile clay track ran by Ed Beckley and his Checkered Flag Productions crew. Beckley also runs Dodge City Raceway Park and has been a supporter of IMCA and BST since his return back to running race tracks in Kansas. “We are proud to have had a part in this historic run for the BST and we are anxiously awaiting what is next from Joe Bellm and his BST Crew,” said Beckley.
The Quest for the Crown started with a two day race in Dodge City, KS. The first race was September 19th, then onto Goodland, KS. for the Flatlander, moving west to Ft. Morgan, Co. at I-76 Speedway for the Fall Classics. Then East to Beatrice, NE. for the Fall Nationals and ending the 2009 Quest in Hays, KS for the 3rd Annual Fall Nationals. After 3 States, 5 Weekends, 7 Races, 300 Modified Drivers, and over 3000 miles traveled and a lot of “BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS” shed throughout the Midwest. The 2009 BST / IMCA Championship came down to ONLY 3 POINTS. With Matt Brack from Mead, CO. winning over Scott Drake from Webb City, MO.
Saturdays night’s main event could not have been scripted any better, with both Matt Brack and Scott Drake racing their way through the C and B Features to start the BST A Main Event qualifying side by side in the 9th row. This kept the crowd on their feet all night long. After 30 laps of racing with Matt Brack racing between 19th and 13th spot and Scott Drake running in the top ten this changed the point battle throughout the entire main event. With the point battle so close, it was thought that Scott Drake was the Champion, until further review of the final finish, showing Matt Brack taking a late race charge gaining four positions giving Matt Brack a 3 point lead in the final standings. Making the “well deserved” MATT BRACK the 2009 Larry Shaw BST/ IMCA Quest for the Crown Champion!

Next year the BST Seris will return to Dodge City, Liberal, and dates are also being planned for Hugoton who recently decided to go with IMCA Sanction.
August 30 Don Graves Memorial

Don Graves was one of those guys that everyone knew. He was one of the friendliest persons I have ever met. Don was the first one to offer help or parts to another racer when he did not even have stuff to run his own car. Don was the type that when he saw you he was the first one to wave. He was taken way before his time, but I guess God knows our clock way before we do.
He left a family – some he was blood related to and the others were racers that felt like they were as close to him as any family member. His wife is a sweetheart and she still to this day works way to hard making custom drivers suits out of the best material and thread she can buy. She misses Don every day and we know that she will be at the races to help us mark this day to his memory.
The night of racing on August 30th will be huge with DC HARLEY 305 SPRINT CARS, MONSTER ENERGY MODIFIEDS, UNITED WIRELESS STOCK CARS vs the FACTORY STOCKS, and the NAPA THUNDER CARS plus we are going to add the SUPERSTOCKS to this race.
Not for sure but I think that Don drove about every type of car there is – so why not bring em all to the party! This is not going to be a sad day but better yet a glad day to celebrate a guy who lived a happy life with a huge smile and I gotta hunch ole’ Don will be watching over us and especially #94 Modified his son Jim Graves.
Tickets will be on sale soon they are $10 for adults, $8 for Sr Citizens, and $5 for kids 3-12 yrs old.
Under 3 years old free.
Discounted adult tickets can be purchased from NAPA in Guymon and Liberal as well as Dodge City.
Pit gates open at 3
Grandstand opens at 5

Coming back to Liberal and putting on races after over 15 years of not being part of it was a challenge we were ready for.
We could not have been ready for this without the help we recieved from the people in Seward County including the Fair Board and the Seward Road and Bridge Crew lead by Tony. Tony and I had several long conversations about the Liberal Fairgrounds race track this past winter. Basically he completely rebuilt the track and added more banking and other clay to mix with what dirt was there to give a really smooth racey track. Tony is a race fan and very good with his track work and his dedication to helping make this work is forthwright.
The spectators and racers that have started coming back to the old track is part of the best things that have happened in Liberal, that and renewing old friendships. Of course the saddest part is coming back and finding out there were at least 2 of my old buddies that had passed on (Don Graves and Nut Cokely), and we did do a lap with three cars carrying flags with their numbers on them to start the Fairs festivities on Sunday and to finish it on Tuesday night.
This past week started the fair and on August 2nd Sunday then again on Monday and Tuesday nights with a tremendous success. This year we had some of the biggest names in IMCA Modifieds roll into the pit gates. On Sunday night there were 58 modifieds alone including David Murry Jr the IMCA 4 time National Champion. This huge count cars were part of the fair because of a great race track and all 3 nights were part of the the Blood Sweat & Tears IMCA Modified Series.
One of the other classes to race were the DC Harley Sprint Cars and Jason Martin won the 3 day Fair Championship mostly by winning the features on Sunday and Mondays races. The only other person to win was Lance Davis who won on Tuesday night with a very convincing win.
Full results and points will be updated soon.
Next auto races for Liberal are Sunday night August 30 with the Don Graves Memorial.
