DCRP Championship Battles Heating Up!

hegerdcrp050314 980Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (May 8, 2014) – With the URSS Sprint Car season opener in the spotlight at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday night, four of the track’s championship chase divisions will be in action as well with the title chase pictures taking shape.

Along with the URSS Sprint Cars, the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Hornets will be in action Saturday night with racing action firing off at 7:30 p.m.

With Jake Bubak kicking off his URSS title defense, Ryan Heger leads the way into Saturday in the IMCA Modifieds with other leading DCRP title contenders on Saturday including Jeff Kaup in IMCA Sport Modifieds, Perry Misner in IMCA Stock Cars and Jarett Lunow in Hornets.

A look at the DCRP title chases…

IMCA Modifieds:

Picking up wins in each of the previous two DCRP season finales, Hugoton’s Ryan Heger is getting off to a fast start in 2014 with a pair of third-place finishes in the opening three events propelling him to a 24-point lead over Cole Traugott, who snared a pair of late-season wins in 2013.  Only 19 points separate the drivers ranked second through seventh, including sixth-ranked and defending champion Austin Allen who comes off a DNF after a run-in with past national champ David Murray last week.  Three drivers have reached victory lane in as many events thus far in 2014 with Ulysses shoe Joel Lane earning a first career Mod win last Saturday.

IMCA Sport Modifieds:

While Michael Shenberger has taken two of three wins, Woodward’s Jeff Kaup has opened up a 53-point advantage over Jason Lunow in his title defense with a win and two runner-up showings with only 22 points separating the seven drivers ranked second through eighth.

IMCA Stock Cars:

2012 track champ Perry Misner is two-for-two thus far including a $750 score in the April 19 Great Plains Stock Car special event.  Michael Pepper isn’t far off the pace in second though with Dusty Witthuhn, Reagan Sellard and Randy Dowell among those also eyeing the top spot.

Thunder Cars:

Reigning champ Dustin Walker has emerged atop the point charts with three top-five finishes in as many features, holding a slim 13-point lead over William Bauer.  Idle this weekend, Thunder Cars return to action May 24.

Hornets:

Defending champ Jarett Lunow is class of the Hornet field with wins in each of the opening pair of events, though it took some last lap heroics for the Dodge City shoe to take the most recent win.

Tickets to Saturday’s season-opening URSS Sprint Car event at Dodge City Raceway Park are just $15 for adults with children 11 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.  Pit passes are $30.
