10 June 2013 | Featured News | |

Mods5 060113 980Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (June 10, 2013) – With summer finally making its first legitimate appearance of the year, racing action resumes full tilt with Championship Chase Round Five on Saturday night at Dodge City Raceway Park.

Saturday’s card will feature a full slate of racing action including IMCA Modifieds, United Wireless IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Thunder Cars on the 3/8-mile clay oval along with Hornets on the inner asphalt oval.

Saturday’s racing action will go green at 7:30 p.m.

Action has been unpredictable on the well-manicured 3/8-mile thus far in 2013 with 14 different winners in 15 overall feature events for the track’s championship chase divisions thus far.  Only Thunder Car shoe Tobby Schield has repeated with different faces in victory lane each time otherwise.

The third of four different IMCA Modified feature winners with a triumph on May 11, Goddard, Kansas’ Austin Allen claimed sole possession of the headliner class points lead with a fifth-place run in the most recent outing on June 1.

Allen’s advantage is a mere ten points over opening day winner Cody Gearhart of Turpin, OK, with Beau Davis (Cheney, KS), Randy Wilson (Wichita, KS) and Danny Keller (Dodge City) rounding out the current top five as only 21 points separate the seven drivers ranked third through ninth.

Woodward, Oklahoma’s Jeff Kaup holds a slim 13-point lead over Bucklin, Kansas’ Clay Sellard in the United Wireless IMCA Sport Modified points chase with Matthew Crowell (Clearwater, KS) and the son-father duo of Josh and Mike Appel (both of Dodge City) filling out the current top five.

Despite being shut out of victory lane through the opening four events, Mooreland, Oklahoma’s Billy Phelps has amassed a 35-point lead over Keith Riley (Larned, KS) in IMCA Stock Car points with Mel Law (Dodge City) and Brett Copeland (Fowler, KS) tied for third and Marlin Hogie (Ulysses, KS) rounding out the top five.

While victorious in two of three Thunder Car outings, Sublette, Kansas’ Tobby Schield still trails Buffalo, Oklahoma’s Dustin Walker by five points in the title chase with Matt O’Hair (Laverne, OK), Cody Davis (Bucklin, KS) and Bryan Habiger (Ingalls, KS) also among the top five.

Dodge City’s Jarett Lunow has been a dominant force in Hornet action by reaching victory lane three times in four tries.  Lunow holds a 25-point lead over Brandon Bogner (Wright, KS) with James Phelps (Mooreland, OK) currently ranked third.

Tickets to this Saturday’s racing action are just $10 for adults, with children 11 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Eighteen scheduled nights of action at Dodge City Raceway Park over the course of 2013 features several special events including the TORC Off Road Trucks in April, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars on July 5-6, a pair of $1,200-to-win IMCA Modified tilts in July along with USAC Sprint Cars on August 23-24 and four rounds of URSS Sprint Car competition along the way.

Dodge City Raceway Park is located on the south edge of Dodge City, KS, on US 283, then 0.9 miles west on US 56, then 0.1 miles south.  For more information, contact the track at 620-225-3277 or check www.dodgecityraceway.com.
