Sat - October 08, 2005 -- Dodge City Raceway Park By Chris Dolack, WoO Sprint Series Public Relations Director Danny Lasoski has searched high and low for wins this season, and it was on the bottom that he found the path to victory Saturday night in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event at Dodge City Raceway Park. Lasoski jumped out to a quick lead in the Bass Pro Shops Mopar Eagle and held off Steve Kinser through five early cautions before Kinser eyed the racing surface beginning to take rubber on an extremely windy night in southwestern Kansas. Kinser maneuvered the Quaker State Maxim into the groove and shot past Lasoski. But Lasoski didn’t back down. Like he did on Friday when he won the preliminary feature, Lasoski found a faster lane on the bottom by running in second and darted back in front to lead the final 12 laps for his second A-feature victory of the season. His preliminary win Friday was his fourth of 2005 as he swept a two-night race for the first time this year. Once he saw Lasoski on the bottom, Kinser dropped down from the top and cruised to the checkered flag in second, but still extended his lead in the championship standings with five race nights remaining in the season. On a restart with 20 of the 40 laps complete, 2006 Outlaw Daryn Pittman powered the Titan Garages & Carports Maxim past fellow ’06 Outlaw Donny Schatz’s ParkerStore J&J to swipe third as Jason Meyers rounded out the top five in the Elite Landscaping Maxim. Brooke Tatnell in the Castrol/Steel Dreams Eagle, Craig Dollansky in the VMAC/Karavan J&J and Terry McCarl in the Big Game Treestands Eagle — all 2006 Outlaws — raced to the checkered flag in line as Paul McMahan in the Selma Shell Maxim and Shane Stewart in the Snap-On Maxim rounded out the top 10. “It’s great to have this Bass Pro Shops Mopar car in victory lane,” said Lasoski, a Mean 15 racer from Dover, Mo. “We’ve been struggling all year long, but it just goes to show that with hard work with [engine builder] Paul Kistler and everybody at Mopar, when you get these engines running these racecars will roll around the racetrack.” With a strong wind whipping across the 3/8-mile oval, Lasoski figured the track would eventually have to take rubber. He guessed right, but Kinser found it first to slide in front on Lap 23. Lasoski was able to move around through traffic and find better grip on the bottom while Kinser was still up top. That helped Lasoski recapture the lead as the two came off of Turn 4 on Lap 28. “I had been looking around for rubber the whole time,” Lasoski said. “I didn’t see it. I didn’t see anybody beside me and I knew I went through the corner pretty good. He got a run on me down the backstretch and I knew it had to be somewhere. Sure enough, there it was off of Turn 2. I found it in Turns 3 and 4 quicker than he did. The lap before, I could have gotten to him but as everybody knows, if you race the King you better get on by and get on by quick. “I hit those corners very good, but for the King to go by me, there had to be rubber there. I went down there and felt it and I got to him and I backed off because I didn’t want to show him.” Kinser figured the path to victory would be along the top, but once he saw Lasoski go back in front he knew it would be tough to win. “I found the rubber first down in Turns 1 and 2,” said Kinser, a Mean 15 racer from Bloomington, Ind. “I searched around for it in Turns 3 and 4, I just didn’t go down low enough. It looked blacker right in the middle, so I tried it there. I was still loose there so I started running the top. I just didn’t go down low enough to catch it. If I would have gone down there I would have been all right. I didn’t catch it until I saw Danny go by and it was too late then.” Pittman’s third-place run for the second night in a row keeps his momentum moving forward as the team gears up for the 2006 Outlaws tour. He has been one of the hottest drivers on the circuit, earning four of his five victories since the Knoxville Nationals. “The last three races I think I’ve been the last guy to find to the rubber and tonight I felt like I was the first,” said Pittman, a Mean 15 racer and native of Owasso, Okla. “I got stuck in the middle and I found the rubber. I did not want to see that yellow come out [with 20 laps down]. If that yellow wouldn’t have come out, I think we would have had a good chance to get up there and battle with Steve and Danny. I know we were the first ones to find it and they weren’t really searching around at that time. But that’s how it goes. The yellow came out. Steve found it trying to slide Lasoski and once he found it the race was pretty much done and everybody was in it. Schatz stayed out of it long enough that we were able to get by him. It was another solid run for us. Hopefully we can get another win before the year is up.” Schatz, who was coming off of wins in the past two A-feature events posted another top five as he and his crew continue using the final races of 2005 to prepare for the 2006 Outlaws season. “Steve found the rubber the quickest, but he made a mistake there and Danny got him back a little lower in Turns 3 and 4,” said Schatz, a Mean 15 racer from Fargo, N.D. “I didn’t really expect it to lay rubber like that. We talked about it being a 40-lap race that it may do it. There’s no way I would have guessed it. We were running third and lost a spot to Daryn, but they’re usually better than us in the rubber anyway. I just never have been very good in the rubber and don’t like it that way. “It was a decent run. We feel like it’s a bad weekend because we didn’t win anything. We were good enough [on Friday] but we blew a motor. We’ll just go on to Phoenix and qualify there.” Meyers, who is second in the championship standings, is hoping to use his top-five as a springboard to success as the season winds down with races next weekend in his native California before the finale in Las Vegas. “I’m looking forward to going home,” said Meyers, a Mean 15 racer from Clovis, Calif. “I think we’re getting our act together. We’ve been running right there every night, we’re just still looking for that ‘W’ column. We’re going home to a track that’s real familiar as well as Vegas, where I’ve had a lot of success. Somehow I wish I knew we were going to get another win. That’s definitely the goal here in the last five races.” The World of Outlaws Sprint Series returns Tuesday to Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix to complete the Cactus Classic, which was postponed by rain in March with Craig Dollansky, Danny Lasoski, Steve Kinser and Shane Stewart locked into the Stacker 2 Dash. Following the Cactus Classic, the Outlaws close out the year with a two-day show Oct. 14-15 at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., and a two-day show Oct. 21-22 at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. DODGE CITY NOTEBOOK • Jason Meyers paced the 30 cars that went through time trials with an AMB i.t.-timed lap around the 3/8-mile oval in 12.502 seconds at 107.983 mph. Donny Schatz, a 2006 Outlaw, set the track record on Friday night when he shattered the Dodge City Raceway Park record with a lap in 12.277 seconds at 109.962 mph. Schatz also was the second quickest racer Saturday night with a lap in 12.510 seconds at 107.914 mph. After finishing in the top four positions during the preliminary feature, Danny Lasoski, Kraig Kinser, Daryn Pittman and Steve Kinser were locked into the Stacker 2 Dash and did not go through time trials or heats. “Getting quick time on the second night is everything,” Meyers said. “The only thing worth getting on the second night is first or second.” • Danny Lasoski’s victory Saturday night was his second A-feature win this season. He also has four preliminary feature victories. … Steve Kinser has a series-leading 19 A-feature victories and six preliminary feature wins this season. … There have been 17 different A-feature winners this season. Including preliminary features, 22 different drivers have visited Victory Lane this season with the Outlaws. … Donny Schatz’s victory Oct. 1 at Williams Grove Speedway was his eighth of the season, second-most this year with the Outlaws. … Kraig Kinser captured the Knoxville Nationals on Aug. 14 for his sixth A-feature victory of the season. He also has a preliminary feature win at Las Vegas. … Jason Meyers earned his fourth win of the season July 2 at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D. … Tim Shaffer’s victory July 19 in the Silver Cup was his third of the season, going with wins Lake Ozark Speedway and Thunderbowl Raceway. … Craig Dollansky has two A-feature victories and three preliminary feature wins. … Brian Paulus won June 28 at Huset’s Speedway for his second victory of the season, and picked up a preliminary feature win in the following race at Red River Valley Speedway. … Brooke Tatnell has two A-feature victories, winning at Cedar Lake and Fulton speedways, as well as a preliminary feature win at Princeton Speedway. … Sammy Swindell won his second A-feature of the season June 4 at Eldora Speedway. Swindell also has a preliminary feature win April 8 at Eldora and Aug. 14 at Knoxville Raceway in the Nationals’ non-qualifiers event. … Fred Rahmer’s victory Friday night was his second preliminary feature win of the season with the Outlaws. Brooke Tatnell, Brandon Wimmer, Jason Martin, and Tim St. Arnold earned the final transfer spots. • In heat race action, Terry McCarl held off Jason Meyers to win the first heat, Donnny Schatz slipped past Randy Hannagan in the final corner to win the second heat, and Shane Stewart raced to victory in the third heat. • The World of Outlaws Sprint Series returns Tuesday to Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix to complete the Cactus Classic, which was postponed by rain in March with Craig Dollansky, Danny Lasoski, Steve Kinser and Shane Stewart locked into the Stacker 2 Dash.
