Kansas Midget Klassic To Honor Fallen Racer
Arvada, CO. (Jan. 8, 2006) Ð The winner of the Saturday Night Feature race at the 3rd Annual ÒKansas Midget KlassicÓ will receive The Ron Hughes Jr. Memorial Award.
Hughes Jr. was a five time Texas Outlaw Midget Champion, winning the title in 1982, 83, 84 and again in 88, 89 after recovering from serious injuries, suffered in a USAC Midget race in Denver, CO. in 1984.
Hughes Jr., although paralyzed by the crash in Denver from the waist down, returned to race again using hand controls and amazingly continued to win races. Ron Hughes Sr., a former Midget racer and long time car owner estimates Ron Jr. won close to 100 Feature races, including a streak of 17 in a row at Big H Speedway in Houston, TX. Ron Jr. also won Feature events before and after his injuries with the MARA Midgets in Illinois.
Ron Jr. started in the Midgets at the age of 19 in 1981 and lost his life in a crash at Devils Bowl Speedway in March of 1990.
The ÒKansas Midget KlassicÓ will kick off the Annual ÒMidget Money WeekÓ on July 22nd and 23rd at the beautiful 3/8 clay Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kansas, followed by races at McCool Junction, NE. and the prestigious Belleville Midget Nationals.
The purse at Dodge City of $25,000.00, with $2,000.00 to win and $200.00 to start each night will be part of the over $120,000.00 in prize money in 8 days, which will draw the best Midget Drivers in the country. |
