Droud Dusts ASCS Rocky Mountain Region at Dodge City
By Lonnie Wheatley
Nebraska's Don Droud, Jr., topped Saturday night's inaugural 25-lap Steve King Memorial event as the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region kicked off the season at Dodge City Raceway Park.
Droud outgunned polesitter Stu Snyder for the point at the drop of the green and led throughout aboard the Ochs Racing MAP Inc. No. 1x Maxim to collect his first career ASCS Rocky Mountain Region feature win.
J.D. Johnson made several bids for the lead in the early going, but to no avail. And after a lap 22 restart, Johnson lost the runner-up slot and was forced pitside after contact while battling for position with Chuck Swenson.
Swenson, the reigning ASCS Northern Plains Region champion, took the runner-up position, with Mike Peters, Larry Neighbors and Snyder rounding out the top five.
Preston Peebles II crossed the stripe in sixth, with Derek Drown, Mike Chadd, C.J. Johnson and Paul Flynn completing the top ten.
Snyder, Gavin Punch, Peters and Neighbors topped heat race action for the 33-car field, with defending ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion Patrick Bourke winning the "B" Main. Bourke raced from 17th to eleventh in the feature.
Garry Lee Maier climbed a tire and flipped on the second lap of the feature without injury.
Punch lost an engine in the Pole Dash and scratched from the "A" Main |
