Opening weekend this Friday and Saturday Night!
This weekend the motors will roar to life and the crowds will pack the stands this weekend as the Reiben Bangerter SPRING NATIONALS blast into the Dodge City Raceway Park. Both tracks will be used as the Hornets and Jr. Sprints will be on the 1/8 mile Asphalt track and the newly refurbished 3/8 mile dirt track will see action on Friday and Saturday night also.
Friday night with expected cool conditions around 60 degrees should see the dirt track at it's finest. Temperatures have been forcast for in the low 70's for the daytime so that means no hot dry winds will dry it out. Plenty of work has already been done to insure the track will hold up,"The URSS Sprint Cars and IMCA Modifieds are here on Friday night and between those two cars there is a whole lot of horsepower with light chassis and of course plenty of agressive driving so we have sheep footed the track where it is harder than Chinese Arithmetic!," said an official from DCRP.
To begin the season with a top event is part of the plan for promoting the track back to the prominence it deserves. REBEIN BANGERTER Law Firm is the presenting sponsor for this weekend. They are a class organization that does business all over and is all about Western Kansas and they have always been race fans so the natural partnership to be involved in this huge event.
Friday night the URSS Sprint Cars are back with drivers like 2007 URSS Champion "SMOKEY" Fairbanks, and 2007 DCRP Champion "the PATROLMAN" Keefe Hemel, the "KANSAS TORNADO" Jon Johnson, the "ICE MAN" Brandon Fisher, "BAD BOY" Brian Herbert, "the HAMMER DOWN LADY" Brooke Boyd, "the TEACHER" Kris Moore, "BIG JOHN" Colbert and many more are coming for their biggest race so far this season. URSS Sprint Cars race at tracks all over Kansas and Eastern Colorado and they are ready to attack the high banked Dodge City Raceway.
Also on Friday the IMCA Modifieds begin their season with new rules and a whole bunch of new cars. Returning hot shoes like "MIGHTY" Matt Rucker, the Garden City brothers Tim and Butch Lieker, plus Kent Lampe, Mike Lunow, Jesse Smith, and George Tyler lead a star studded field. The Mofidieds are full of talent including former stock car star families like Mike Martin, as well as Danny Keller. Mike Martin's dad is former Champion of the old Dodge City Speedway J.D. Martin and Danny's dad was the 1982 Late Model Champion at the Dodge City Speedway. Alot of talent and experience in this class plus a whole lot of rookies makes for some exciting racing.
Hornets! Oh little these cars are fun to watch but even more fun to drive and we have two classes this year the Youth/Ladies class and an Open Class where anyone can have some fun.
Saturday night the ground pounding NCRA SPRINT CARS are in Dodge City! Some of the drivers in the NCRA have raced with the World of Outlaw drivers like Donny Droud Jr from Lincoln, Nebraska will be in competition and he is driving the Ochs Racing Sprint car from Jetmore. Other drivers like J.D. Johnson, "Quick Draw" Garry Lee Maier, Luke Cranston, "Bad Boy" Brian Herbert, and drivers like former Champion Mike Peters.
Joining the show on Saturday night are two classes of stock cars. The IMCA stock cars are new this year and they are going to be very equal so plenty of side by side racing should be the rule. Thunder cars is the other class and while just getting started it seems the entry level class with rear wheel drive cars and front wheel drive cars powered by everything from 4 cylinders to big V 8's is going to be a cheap way to get into racing on the big track.
Tickets are only $8 dollars for Adults and kids 3-12 are $5 dollars with under 3 years old free. Gates open at 5:30pm on Friday and Saturday they open at 5pm. Races start each night at 7:30pm and our goal is to have the last checkered flag waving before 11pm no matter what.
The concession stands will have plenty of good food including those unbelievable TACO's, plus this weekend they are making Enchilada's. Coke is in the pit area, and grandstand as well as Monster Energy, and Power Ade drinks. Budweiser and Coors in the can in the grandstand only. Coffee and Hot Chocolate are also available.
No brought in food or drink into the grandstand area. No coolers or anything like that allowed in the spectator areas. No alocholic beverages in the pit area till after the races are over in the pit area.
So saddle up and head to good ole DODGE CITY RACEWAY PARK for this weekends events... and as we always say, LET'S GO RACING!
