Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (June 27, 2017) – The state-of-the-art Dodge City Raceway Park will reach the midway point of the 2017 racing season with a full card of championship chase action this Saturday night.
Saturday’s action that fires off at 7:30 p.m. features the Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Cars along with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Hobby Stocks.
Thus far, huge fields of cars have been the norm on nights in which all five featured championship chase divisions have been in action with an average of more than 100 cars per night.
The season opener on April 15 included 98 competitors with the total climbing to 101 on May 6 and then 104 entries on May 28.
The 3/8-mile clay oval comes off the Lewis Automotive DCRP Sprint Car Nationals on June 16-17 in which Fort Worth, Texas’ Kevin Ramey took the $3,000 winner’s share ahead of Nebraska’s Trevor Grossenbacher and Colorado’s Jake Bubak after Wright, Kansas’ Tyler Knight topped the preliminary feature.
The June 16-17 weekend also featured IMCA Modifieds on both nights with Randle McRoberts and Tracy Link picking up wins to make it three different winners in the last three races after Cole Traugott raced to victory lane in the opening two events of the season.
The IMCA Stock Cars also took part in the June 17 portion of the weekend with two-time and reigning track champ Michael Pepper putting a stop to Angel Munoz’ three-race win streak.
Meanwhile, the IMCA Sport Modiifeds and IMCA Hobby Stocks will see DCRP action on Saturday night for the first time in more than a month since their last competition on May 28. Woodward’s Jeff Kaup has topped two of three Sport Modified mains with Reagan Sellard rebounding from a heat race flip to become the third different Stock Car winner in as many events last time out.
Turpin, Oklahoma’s Taylor Velasquez (DCRP Sprint Cars), the Woodward duo of Traugott (IMCA Modifieds) and Kaup (IMCA Sport Modifieds), Colorado’s Munoz (IMCA Stock Cars) and Bucklin’s Reagan Sellard (IMCA Hobby Stocks) lead the way in title chase action entering Saturday’s card.
Munoz has the healthiest of point leads entering the weekend with a 76-point advantage over Travis Baird, slightly more than Kaup’s 66-point edge over Alex Wiens and Traugott’s 55-point lead over Clay Sellard. The other two chases are neck-and-neck with Velasquez just 16 points ahead of Tyler Knight in the Sprint Car ranks and Reagan Sellard a mere eight points ahead of Duane Wahrman in the Hobby Stock battle.
