Murray Win 980Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 20, 2013) – David Murray made the most of his first Dodge City Raceway Park weekend of the season by completing a sweep of the Inaugural Dodge City Modified Stampede in Saturday night’s 30-lap IMCA Modified main event atop the 3/8-mile clay oval.

Murray made his way past Austin Allen on the 17th round then held on through traffic over the final rounds to take the $1,200 victory, bringing the Oberlin, Kansas driver’s weekend take to $2,400 after winning Friday night’s main event as well.

While Murray swept through the Modified Stampede, Andy Barton picked off his first United Wireless IMCA Sport Modified win, Perry Misner became the eighth different winner in as many IMCA Stock Car features and Matt O’Hair claimed Thunder Car honors on the last lap.

After leading the final 18 laps of Friday night’s main event, Murray gridded Saturday’s feature outside the fifth row.  While pole starter Austin Allen outgunned Mike Martin for the lead at the outset, Murray needed just a half dozen laps to move into third behind Allen and third-starter Cole Traugott.

Murray chased Traugott down for second by the 13th round then reeled in Allen before making his move into the lead on the 17th circuit.

With traffic coming into play on the 20th lap, Allen kept the pressure on Murray with several challenges for the lead as Traugott closed in on the lead duo as well.

Murray was flawless in traffic, keeping his chasers at bay to secure his second win in as many nights.  Allen took over the DCRP points lead with runner-up honors while Traugott claimed the show position.  Jon Herring, Jr., was fourth with Beau Davis rounding out the top five.

Brendon Gemmill was sixth, with Van Gemmill, 14th-starter Joe Cleveland, 16th-starter Troy Gemmill and 19th-starter Nick Link completing the top ten in a feature in which the final 29 laps ran non-stop after the lone caution flew with just one lap in the books.

Andy Barton Win IMCA Sport Mod DCRP 072013In United Wireless IMCA Sport Modified action, Andy Barton of Dighton, KS, wired the field in the 20-lapper for his first score at DCRP in three years of trying.

Barton started the feature third row outside but was into the lead upon the completion of the first lap and held command the rest of the way.  Donald Kaup chased the leader over the first half of the race before Friday night winner Austin Walker moved into second and set his sights on Barton.

Walker closed to Barton’s rear bumper over the final pair of circuits, but Barton was up to challenge and denied Walker a weekend sweep in the process.  Behind the lead duo, DCRP points leader Jeff Kaup slipped underneath his brother Don Kaup for the show position in the final corner with Toby Witthuhn rounding out the top five.

Making just his second DCRP start of the year, defending IMCA Stock Car track champion Perry Misner battled past Ron Hartman for the lead on the 17th lap en route to becoming the eighth different winner in as many Stock Car feature events this season.

While Misner started seventh, Hartman gunned into the lead from the pole position at the drop of the green flag and held off Keith Riley and Sonny O’Hair in the initial circuits with Misner making his way to third by the fourth lap.

Misner was up to second by the sixth lap and pressured Hartman over the next ten laps before finally making the winning move stick on the 17th lap.  Hartman kept the heat on over the final three rounds but had to settle for second as Misner claimed the checkered flag.  Michael Pepper was a close third, with Tyler Tipton and Sonny O’Hair rounding out the top five.

Matt O'Hair Win Thunder Cars DCRP 072013As the laps wound down in the Thunder Car main event, Matt O’Hair looked to be a likely third place finisher.  But a turn of events as the white flew in the 20-lapper opened the door for the Laverne, Oklahoma driver’s second win of the year.

As O’Hair worked his way forward from the ninth starting position, pole starter Adam Duesing jumped into the lead at the outset and held a commanding lead until heavy smoke began billowing from his machine just as the white flag flew.

At the same time, debris in turn four forced a caution to set up a green-white-checkered dash to the line.  With Duesing forced pitside with engine woes, Michael Penrod assumed the lead in front of O’Hair.

Penrod held off O’Hair for a lap, but O’Hair was able to battle past Penrod on the backstretch on the final lap to take the win with Penrod in second.  Bryan Habiger claimed third with W.D. Matteson and David Shumard rounding out the top five.

Action resumes at Dodge City Raceway Park next Friday night, July 26, with Fire & Safety / EMS Appreciation night featuring URSS Sprint Cars along with IMCA Modifieds, United Wireless IMCA Sport Modifieds and IMCA Stock Cars.
